iPhone App Review: The Bad Girl’s JournalMarch 4th, 2013 by dancemonkey
Bad girls and journal lovers out there will want to take a look at the new Bad Girl’s Journal from developer Bad Girl Swirl. Inspired by the best-selling “Bad Girl’s Guide” book series by Cameron Tuttle, this journaling app is unlike any other in the App Store. Sure it will let you keep a diary and all that other jazz associated with, you know, keeping a diary. But it also lets you create a Bad Girl Alias for a password, tag your entries by mood and topic, include pictures and stickers on each of your entries, and it even has some fun mini-games to keep you entertained and offer exceptionally bad advice.
How It Works
For the most part the app is set up like a journal, as one would expect. You can create new entries, edit old ones, and play around with the look of the font (size, color, alignment, etc.). You can add pictures and some included stickers, then rotate, re-size, and add fun frames. If that isn’t enough you can even select from a drop-down list of topics and moods for each entry, and change the overall theme of the entire journal. The options are almost limitless and are fun in and of themselves.
Along the toolbar are some of the options you would expect: a search function, a sharing function (share via email or save entries to your image library), and along the bottom there’s even a “panic button” the instantly makes it looks like you’re reading a plain old e-book. You’ll need to log back in when the coast is clear. If the panic button doesn’t work or you just want to have some good old-fashioned cathartic nirvana you can “burn” an entry, which is a fancy way of deleting it except with flames and smoke and a cool burning effect. You can practically smell the burning glue.
Speaking of logging in, you don’t just set a password in The Bad Girl’s Journal. You create a three-part alias by combining words on a set of wheels from the main screen when you first start the app, then use that as your “key” to unlock the journal from that point forward. I have dubbed myself Lady Sassy Shoes.
Pros And Cons
Although I am almost 30 years and a full gender away from being their target demographic, I found The Bad Girl’s Journal to be a fun and exciting way to keep a daily diary. Even with all of the bells and whistles (and flames and smoke!) the developers didn’t lose sight of what their app was really all about: keeping a journal. And if you’re looking for something to actually journal about, you can spin a wheel and get yourself a “challenge” for the day. You can also ask a question of one of several “bad girls” and receive some fairly terrible and/or nonsensical bad girl advice (all in good fun of course).
The Bad Girl’s Journal is a fun, cool, and different way to keep a diary that even manages to add in a light-hearted good time. It’s a great journal app the lets you add pictures and search the entire database, and includes some fun extras that are just icing on the journaling cake. To top it all off it’s a Universal app and it’s only $1.99.
